Bicol Artists  Hold Protest Rally

Plaza Quince Martirez, Naga City – groups of Bicolano artists held a program entitled Haliya Nin Banwaan: Protesta sa Pagratak sa Premio Artista Nacional last 4 September. Ateneo de Naga University Media Studies Department (ADNU-MSD) faculty member Victor Dennis Nierva and Bicol writer Marissa Reorizo-Casillan convened the said endeavor in remonstration of the insertion of the names of four personalities namely: Cecile Guidote Alvarez (theater), Magno Jose Carlo Caparas (visual arts and film), Jose 'Pitoy' Moreno (fashion design) and Francisco 'Bobby' Mañosa (architecture) in the shortlist made by the NCCA (National Center for Culture and the Arts) and the CCP (Cultural Center of the Philippines).

Highlights of the event were cultural presentations of the University of North Eastern Philippines Cultural Center, the ADNU’s Teatro Dignos, and the ADNU Choir.

Among the participants were students and representatives from Camarines Sur State Agricultural Colleges, Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges, Camarines Sur National High School, Ateneo de Naga University and ThePILLARS publication.

The National Union of Students of the Philippines and the College Editor’s Guild of the Philippines (Bicol) also showed their support.

Haliya is an ancient Bicolano prayer ritual done in the epic Ibalon to drive away the monster Bakunawa, believe to have swallowed the moon or the sun during an eclipse.
