ASEAN, Asan Na? Roadshow

September 24—the Social Sciences Department, in cooperation with the Working Group for ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism and the Commission on Human Rights, held a seminar at the Arrupe Convention Hall at 3:00pm. Human Rights: Asan Na Yan sa ASEAN is a Nationwide University Roadshow which aims to raise awareness on the ASEAN movement and the importance of Human Rights within the Region.

Mr. Ramon Beleno III, Chairperson of the Social Sciences Department, formally started the event by introducing the three speakers, two from the Working Group for ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism and one from the Commission on Human Rights. Atty. Maita Chan Gonzaga then gave a brief description about the working group which is a regional coalition of people from the academe, civil societies and government agencies. She then gave the podium to her working group fellow, Ms. Kristina Merginio who provided more details on the aims, accomplishments, and the purpose of the ASEAN. She also gave a brief description on the working body of the organization. Atty. Gonzaga then returned to the floor to give further details on Human Rights where she first gave a basic run through of the concept and its developments within the ASEAN region.

After the presentation from the working group, Atty. Mygee Nieves, representative of the Commission on Human Rights RV, took the floor to present a more local view of Human Rights. In her talk, she gave the recent HR cases in the Bicol region, providing statistics and actual cases. A question and answer portion followed.
